Technician

Mr Dominic Barker is a Technician in Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

I graduated from Southampton with a degree in archaeology in 1989. From 1990 until 2001, I worked for a number of commercial archaeological units throughout the country. I have developed skills such as topographical survey, geophysical survey, desk-based assessment, extensive evaluations, standing building survey and post excavation analysis. I have extensive excavation experience on a variety of different sites including deeply stratified, urban excavations and extensive rural evaluations and excavations. I have worked abroad in Denmark, Egypt, Oman, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Spain, France, Belgium, Austria, Jordan, Turkey and Syria as well as travelling in Qatar.

My main area of interest is Conflict archaeology Of the late medieval to post-medieval periods.

Research interests

I have carried out research on 18th century military camp sites in the south of England. The focus of this work was an integrated survey of a site of the Seven Years War (1756-1763) known as Shroton Camp, near Blandford in Dorset. This programme successfully located features and cultural material associated with the camp. I have been consulted on commercial work on similar sites near Winchester and Salisbury and I am currently researching an important late 18th century light infantry camp at Old Sarum near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

I have been working in collaboration with the Battlefields Trust on locating battlefields sites of the English Civil War and Wars of the Roses.

Netley Abbey survey project

This project was carried out in conjunction with English Heritage in order to provide a practical, intensive survey experience for second-year students taking the Archaeological Survey and Recording course and third year students taking the Geophysical Survey course. This experience built on and reinforced skills and tasks already introduced in the classroom environment.

Old Sarum and Stratford-Sub-Castle

The site of Old Sarum is located in Wiltshire some 3km to the north of Salisbury in the Avon Valley. The monument, includes a multivallate Iron Age hillfort with evidence of Romano-British occupation and documentary evidence of a Saxon burh and mint. The site was rebuilt as a royal motte and bailey castle including a cathedral and bishop's palace and extra-mural settlement.

Portchester Castle survey project - Dormant

The Portchester Castle Survey Project was established as a collaboration between the University of Southampton and English Heritage to produce a new survey of the castle and its immediate surroundings.
