The Centre for Maritime Archaeology provides a focus for maritime archaeological research at the University of Southampton.
Our multidisciplinary research draws on the University's established excellence in archaeology, marine geophysics, history, environmental science, computing and ship science to address diverse maritime archaeological and underwater cultural heritage questions.
Our members include established international experts and emerging scholars, undertaking innovative, multidisciplinary research in areas from pleistocene submerged landscapes and shipwreck archaeology to ethnographic studies and experimental archaeology.
Our taught and research postgraduates benefit from the diverse learning opportunities provided by the Centre and go on to work professionally in academia, maritime archaeological and marine industries, and the wider heritage sector.
Our research engages with the public, private and third sector around the world. We collaborate and work in partnership with other academic institutions, marine industries, heritage agencies, museums and the broader public.
