International Student Careers Programme
As an international student at the University of Southampton you can sign up to an enhanced programme of careers support, tailored to meet your needs. This includes five workshops and a LinkedIn group, plus tailored appointments and support from our Specialist Careers Consultant.
The programme is tailored for postgraduate students who have some industry experience. We look at building personalised and agile career planning strategies, for example, harnessing the temporary contractor market and utilising the right recruitment agencies to access the experienced hire job market.
If you are an undergraduate student or you do not have any industry experience, this content will still be relevant to you and you are very welcome to join. You can also access all the wider support available through Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise.
Workshops
A series of five workshops run continuously throughout the year, both online and in person:

- Workshop 4. Tailoring CVs for UK Employers

University of Southampton International Talent Community
International job seekers at the University can stay in touch via our University of Southampton International Talent Community LinkedIn group. This is a platform for sharing opportunities that are:
- Offering visa sponsorship
- Part-time opportunities (20 hours a week or fewer) that are eligible for those who have a Student visa
- Temporary roles that can be accessed whilst on the post study work visa (Graduate visa)
Plus
- Sharing job offer successes
- Tips on how people found their jobs and succeeded in interviews and applications
- Connections with employers and alumni
International Student Careers Clinic
International students who have attended the workshops listed above can then access appointments with our Specialist Careers Consultant for international students. Appointments are advertised via the Talent Community LinkedIn group and can be booked via MyCareer.
Specialist Careers Consultant (International)
Gemma O’Donoughue is the Specialist Careers Consultant for international students.
Gemma leads on developing enhanced support for international students and is part of a team of over fifty staff in Careers, Employability Student Enterprise who all work to support you.
Careers support available to all students
As well as the enhanced international programme outlined above, you can access our full range of careers support available through Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise, including:
- 15-minute Ask the Adviser and CV Support appointments
- 45-minute referral appointments with a Careers Consultant for in-depth career guidance
- Range of work experience options available including paid internships
- Multiple Careers Fairs which include visa friendly identifiers on stands
- Employer networking events
- Industry talks and webinars
- E-Mentoring: a worldwide network of professionals you can contact for advice and connections
- A range of resources including CV and interview feedback AI tools and online videos
- Access to eCareersGrad 'International Students, Target the Right Employers' with data on which employers have sponsored visa-holders recently
