Event details

In 2019, Boris Johnson’s Conservative UK majority of 80 rested on a majority in England of 156. In that election the Conservatives won amongst those who identify as more English than British’ and ‘equally English and British’, while Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour lead amongst the ‘more British than English’. The same English identifiers had earlier driven Brexit. What will shape the next election in England? Do Brexit and contested ideas of the nation still drive votes? What of culture wars and tensions between socially liberal and socially conservative values? With inflation, low growth and ‘levelling-up’ just an idea, will economic loom large? How will the different electoral geography of villages, towns and cities come into play? Can the Conservative keep their electoral coalition together and can Labour extend its base of support With Matt Goodwin, Kent Paula Surridge, Bristol and UKICE Ailsa Henderson, Edinburgh Lawrence McKay, Southampton
