Fairness and equality in Chemistry at Southampton recognised with an Athena SWAN silver award.
Chemistry at the University of Southampton has been awarded an Athena SWAN (Scientific Women’s Academic Network) Silver Award, recognising its continuing efforts to support the career aspirations of female chemists, eliminating gender bias and promoting opportunities for all. This is the first Silver Award to be awarded at the University.
Chemistry received a Bronze Award for its achievements in 2013, alongside Electronics and Computer Science, Medicine and Ocean and Earth Science, and has now demonstrated further achievement in improving fairness and equality.
Professor Phil Gale, Head of Chemistry comments: "I am delighted that Chemistry at Southampton has received an Athena SWAN Silver Award. This award recognises the hard work put in by the Self Assessment Team and the Equality and Diversity Committee over the last two years in changing the working culture in Chemistry. I would particularly like to thank Dr Lynda Brown for putting our submission to Athena SWAN together. More important than the award though is the fact that our department is now an even better place to work for all our staff and I am delighted this has been recognised by Athena SWAN."
Andrea Russell , Professor of Electrochemistry, adds: “The process of applying for the Athena SWAN award helped us to identify areas of strength in the culture and procedures of our department, including our mentoring scheme for new academic staff and the use of senior women as role models. We are delighted this has been recognised.”
The University of Southampton is a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter.
