In 2010 Chinese premier Wen Jiabao surprised but also confused viewers when he mentioned on CNN that he kept a copy of Adam Smith's "Theory of Moral Sentiments" (TMS, 1759) on his bedside table.
Since that time Chinese interest in Smith's thought has if anything increased. In this talk Dr Jonathan Conlin (History) will explain how, together with the artist Edward Luper, he is producing a graphic novel version of TMS, aimed at Chinese readers.
What are the challenges involved in presenting the eighteenth-century Scottish thinker's ideas in visual form?
