Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Apply risk assessment in the general workplace.
- Prepare written risk assessments and hazard identification to specific research/work cases in order to mitigate the risk of exposure as posed by hazardous reagents.
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Appraise and employ a variety of sources materials to apply to practical research, especially novel cases.
- Conduct and apply risk assessment techniques to a given set of input variables/constraints.
- Identify common laboratory hazards, the risks they may potentially pose, and how to mitigate those risks through application of risk assessment techniques.
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Identify laboratory hazards, evaluate risk, and understanding of how to apply risk assessment to mitigate risk.
- An awareness of health and safety legislation applicable to workplaces that employ hazardous substances.

Basic introduction.
COSHH & Risk Assessments (basic legal requirements)
Compressed gas safety awareness
Laboratory Hazardous Waste disposal.
Reactive chemical hazards and explosions.
Cryogenics safety awareness
Radiation: an outline of potential hazards in the laboratory and risk mitigation.
Effects of laboratory chemicals on the human body
Fire safety with respect working in laboratories (+ practical)
Electrical safety with respect to portable appliances (+ practical)
