Wellbeing Day 2014
Wellbeing Day is a showcase to inform and engage staff and students in all aspects of keeping in good shape. With a core focus on mental health, visitors on 4 November had a choice of a great range of activities - from the academic to the zany.
Many hundreds of people came to both Garden Court and Hartley Suite to enjoy the mix of timetabled events and chats with stallholders. The latter covered both University and external services.
WBD co-founder Professor Cathy Pope introduced the keynote session, with guest speaker Sarah Wheeler from the Dragon Café mental health project in south-east London.
Here are some quotes from staff who had attended some of the workshops:
“I have noticed that I am more aware of my breathing patterns during the day and the way in which the use of simple techniques can improve well-being whilst at work and at home.” [following workshop on movement & breathing, Paul Riddy]
“The talk on social anxiety [Help, Everyone’s Looking at me - Lusia Stopa] has shown me that I am not alone with worries about social situations. This has helped me a lot.”
“Signalling matters was very interesting. The speaker [Tom Lynch] was engaging and it was fascinating to learn about his experience in the field.”
“Nick Maguire's session [Why am I so worried about this?] was excellent and helpful to be able to apply this to the working environment.”
A range of wellbeing-related activities across the University are planned for 2015.
