Remembering the Titanic with teachers and museum educators
Teachers are often left alone in their endeavours to integrate informal and outdoors learning into their curriculum.
This was an exciting collaboration between the University of Southampton, history and science teachers from Southampton secondary schools, and museum educators from SeaCity Museum to develop a curriculum unit focussed on the history of Titanic and Southampton for Key Stage 3 pupils.
The idea behind this project is to support teachers in integrating informal and outdoors learning environments into their curriculum, as well as stimulating place attachment and civic engagement by learning about the local history through an authentic experience.
The curriculum development is guided by the following principles:
- integration of school subjects (Science and History)
- integration of school-based and out-of-school learning
- place-based learning
- disaster and tragedy education
The project has positively impacted teachers’ and museum educators’ perceptions about the benefits of cross-subject collaboration and informal learning experiences in facilitating young people’s knowledge of and interest in their community. The final products of the project will be disseminated to local schools and shared online for broader impact.
