Event details
Educational researchers often need to construct precise and reliable measurement scales of complex and varied objects such as participants’ written work, videoed lesson segments and policy documents. Developing such scales can be resource-intensive and time-consuming, and the outcomes are not always reliable. In this talk, I present an alternative method based on comparative judgement (CJ) that has been growing in popularity over recent years. Together, we will consider the contexts in which CJ-based methods are appropriate before describing in detail what they are and how they can be applied to construct measurement scales in educational research. I will illustrate the power of this method through a pair of empirical projects focused on argumentation and proof in HE mathematics, and will explore tools for reliability and validity in this context.

Dr Ben Davies , joined the Southampton School of Education in 2022. Before joining, he worked at University College London (UCL) as a Lecturer and Assessment Designer in the Department of Mathematics. Ben grew up in New Zealand, where he completed a BSc in Mathematics at the University of Auckland. In 2019, he completed his PhD in Mathematics Education at Loughborough University, under the supervision of Lara Alcock and Ian Jones, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at West Virginia University (WVU) for one year in 2020. Ben’s research interests centre on novel and inclusive assessment practices for higher education, as well as methodological topics connected to comparative judgement and its potential across the social sciences. Ben has recently also embarked on a new Knowledge Exchange project, based on developing interactive online textbooks based on the ‘School Mathematics Project’ archive.
