Event details
Is teaching an art or a science? In this presentation, I offer a fresh perspective on this longstanding debate by showing how past and emerging conceptions of schooling are based on a logic that limits the possibilities for teachers to meaningfully express their artistry.
This philosophical analysis includes a four-part argument which draws on the work of Tyack & Cuban (1995) and Biesta (2023). Part one explains how a technicist logic for mass schooling and teaching became established during the initial phases of the Industrial Revolution, tending towards the standardised production of specific learning outcomes. Part two shows how this logic is being repurposed towards the production of meta-level learning outcomes in response to recent technological developments and predictions for the world of work. Part three details the problems for schooling and teaching resulting from this logic. Part four provides a contrasting conception of teaching as a form of artistry.
