The Right Honourable Lord Deben PC,,Chairman of The Committee on Climate Change,,was once described by Friends of the Earth as "the best Environment Secretary we've ever had". As John Selwyn Gummer he held various cabinet posts in the Heath, Thatcher and John Major governments before moving to the shadow cabinet during the Blair years. In 2010 he joined the House of Lords as Lord Deben in order to campaign for environmental issues, social justice and for engagement with the European Union - of which he is a strong advocate.
