Dr. Craig Dolder is a visiting academic from Sloan Water Technology, a spin-out company based on devices invented in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton.

He graduated with his PhD in May 2014 from The University of Texas at Austin where he worked for the Applied Research Laboratories researching varied topics including fish school acoustics and turbulent flow noise. Prior to his work at The University of Texas he obtained his BSE in Acoustical Engineering at the University of Hartford.

Research interests

Research interests involve utilizing acoustics to produce practical solutions to complex problems. Work is primarily in bubble acoustics using bubble theory to model fish schools and utilizing ultrasonically activated bubbles to clean filters in waste treatment reactors. Also interested in sustainable energy, hearing-loss prevention, and turbulence.

Research projects: Clearing biofouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactors using ultrasonically activated bubbles. (Project with Tim Leighton, Sonia Heaven, and Charles Banks)

This project aims to increase the efficiency of energy harvesting from wastewater treatment bioreactors by removing membrane fouling using ultrasonically activated bubbles. Using activated bubbles is believed to be less energy intensive than traditional gas sparging and should allow the membranes to remain clear, providing better waste treatment and methane production

Research project(s)

Are some people suffering as a result of increasing mass exposure of the public to ultrasound in air?

Clean water and green energy from waste using bubble acoustics

StarStream (2016 onwards)

StarSaver - cleaning wounds when water is scarce

Bubble Management in an Ultrasonic System to Clean using a Water Stream

The StarStream device cleans using only room temperature water, ultrasound and air. This CASE award studentship, funded by EPSRC and Ultrawave Ltd., examines method of improving the StarStream by looking at the engineering associated with the water supply components of the device. This entails the design and construction of new bubble diagnostics technology.
