Professor Honor Powrie
Visiting Professor
Professor Honor Powrie FREng, FInstP is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
Since 2007, Professor Powrie has worked for General Electric (GE) and prior to this held positions with Smiths Aerospace, University spin-out company Stewart Hughes Ltd and RAE Farnborough (QinetiQ). Prof Powrie has nearly 30 years’ experience in Machinery Health Monitoring Systems and more than 50 publications on related topics. In her current role as Senior Director of Data Science and Analytics, Prof Powrie leads GE Aerospace’s UK Data Science group, which delivers innovative AI/ML based solutions for managing Aviation assets.
During her career, Honor has been involved in a range of technology programs from deploying electrostatic sensors for the Joint Strike Fighter engine, to qualifying landing gear for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Honor has worked across multiple engineering domains including Wind Turbines, Land Vehicles, Industrial Power and Oil & Gas.
Honor is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist. She is Deputy Chair of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers’ Tribology Group Committee (TGC) and an Ordinary Member of the IOP TGC.
Since 2011, Honor has been a Visiting Professor at nCATS. She has been working with nCATS, and prior to that the Engineering Materials Research Group / Surface Engineering and Tribology Group, for over 25 years.
In her role as a Visiting Professor, Honor performs industrial liaison activities with the University, including joint research programmes, industrial consultation, PhD and Part III project supervision, delivering guest lectures and mentoring. Honor is also very active in GE’s internship programme and regularly recruits STEM students from Southampton.
Honor is currently Honorary RAEng Visiting Professor in Data and Analytics, Asset Condition Monitoring and Management.
