Dr Tony Curran is a member of the University’s Public Engagement with Research unit. He runs the University’s Research Roadshow and Researchers’ Café and the University Challenged competition. He is leading on improving the spectrum of ways in which all members of the University can get involved with engaging the public. Tony runs talks and interactive shows with environmental themes: the burger apocalypse, the sustainability game show, the future of energy and the future of waste.

There is a real sense that Southampton is becoming an engaged university, with a growth in how we are connecting across the faculties, with the local community and at a national level.

Tony Curran's previous research project was ‘Zero Waste in Industrial Networks’ (ZeroWIN), working with Professor Ian Williams. This work sought to combine innovative technologies with waste prevention methods and strategies such as eco-design, industrial symbiosis, green supply chain management and product stewardship (and producer responsibility) in key industrial sectors in Europe. Tony and Ian were responsible for creating the vision for the ZeroWIN project as well as supporting several other work packages. Particular focus was on sustainable construction and demolition practices. Tony completed his PhD in 2008 on ‘Household Bulky Waste Collection and Re-use in England’. In addition to the 6 publications listed, this research has been rewritten as a chapter for Dr Tim Cooper’s book ‘Longer Lasting Products: Alternatives to the Throwaway Society’. Tony coordinates the University's "Bringing Research to Life" outreach roadshow, formed of advanced modules demonstrating leading research across the faculties. Outside of academia Tony is an officer in the Army Reserve and a volunteer with the children’s charity Country Holidays for Inner City Kids – CHICKS.
