National honour for Professor AbuBakr Bahaj
The Science Council has named Professor AbuBakr Bahaj from the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Engineering and the Environment (FEE) as one of the UK’s 100 leading practising scientists. He has been recognised as a ‘policymaker scientist’ for combining his scientific and technical knowledge with an understanding of local government to inform local policy decisions in his role as Chief Scientific Advisor at Southampton City Council.
For more than 25 years, Professor Bahaj has pioneered sustainable energy research by directing the work of one of the UK's leading university-based research groups, the Sustainable Energy Research Group, ( www.energy.soton.ac.uk , SERG) within FEE. Projects included ground breaking research into energy technologies, energy efficiency measures, cities and infrastructure and the impact of climate change on the built environment undertaken in the UK, China, the Middle East and Africa.
The Science Council list has been compiled to challenge narrow and old fashioned stereotypes of scientists and encourage more young people to study the subject. David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science says: "If we want more people to enter a career in science, we need to show that the scientific community is not some exclusive club but people with a wide variety of vocations and interests who have rewarding careers and are making a significant contribution to the wealth and well-being of the UK."
