Research project: Modelling sound generation in pianos

Currently Active:
Yes

This PhD project aims at developing modelling techniques for the sound generation in pianos, from activating the keys to producing sound.

The sound generated by a piano starts by activating a key, this moves various components of the action, including the hammer, which strikes one or multiple strings. The soundboard’s bridges couple the string to the soundboard which in turn radiates sound.

During this PhD we will develop mathematical models of the most important components of a piano and of their mutual interaction. This will enable investigating the importance and the effect that the properties of the different parts have on the generated sound.
