Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century Literature and Chawton House Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr Kim Simpson is the Chawton House Postdoctoral Fellow and lectures in eighteenth-century literature.

I have a BA, MA and PhD from the University of Kent. I joined English at Southampton in September 2016 at the same time as taking up a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Chawton House where my role has included academic programming, exhibition curation, and editing the Chawton House magazine, The Female Spectator. I was a Visiting Fellow at Chawton House back in 2012. I am a member of the Southampton Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies (SCECS).

Research interests

My research interests include women’s writing of the long eighteenth century; amatory fiction; anonymity, pseudonymity, and attribution; masquerade; the body; afterlives and adaptation; feminist and queer theories.

My PhD was on amatory fiction, and provided a re-examination of this early eighteenth-century genre in terms of its treatment of identity, authorship, materiality, power and desire. The aim was to broaden the scope of what might be considered ‘amatory’ by reading unfamiliar and anonymous texts alongside those authored by recognised amatory writers such as Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, and Eliza Haywood. It was a project motivated by a wider interest in canonisation and forgetting.

I am currently working on transcribing a cache of letters written by the novelist and abolitionist Amelia Opie to her Quaker friend Thomas Richardson.

I am also undertaking a long-term research project which focuses on neglected anonymous fiction published in the early decades of the eighteenth century.
