Lisa Thompson BA Film and English

Hi, I'm Lisa Thompson and I studied BA Film and English within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

The course looked amazing, and there are loads of great options to choose from in your second and third year so you can do things you really enjoy. It's interesting, challenging and lots of fun, and I've really enjoyed it!

Why did you choose to study English and film studies as part of your course?

Why did you choose Southampton?

I’ve always lived in the country and around small towns, so for university I wanted to go to a top university in a city with lots going on, but which wasn't too big. When I came to Southampton and saw the city and the University I knew I had to come here! The facilities are amazing and everyone was really friendly and helpful. I also liked the fact the halls, University and town were all really close. The city and University are very green so it's pretty and great for enjoying the summer.

What do you like most about studying English and film studies?

I love the huge choice available when choosing modules; there are always some that I know I’ll love. The lecturers obviously want to be teaching us interesting subjects that we’ll enjoy, and they do!

What do you like most about the city and the University?

The city is the perfect size. You get to know the town centre really well, there’s always loads going on to suit everyone and it’s really close to the University and the main student living areas.

What is your typical week like?

I have either three or four lectures a week, three or four seminars, and two screenings, which are spread out all over the week. I usually try to get up by 10 am if it's not an early start, and work most of the day until around 5 or 6 pm depending on how well I’m doing. That gives me the evenings and weekends off to do what I like! Some weeks I have to work harder and longer than others, mainly when deadlines are coming up, but as long as you stay on top of your work and aren’t too lazy, you can have lots of free time.

Do you have any advice for a new first year?

I think it’s really important to get involved in your discipline society, and when they organise a social - go! It’s a great way to get out and get to know all your course mates. Socials are always so much fun - so don’t miss out.
