Dr Tatiana Sofia Alvares-Sanches PhD, MArch, MSc, PgCert, RIBA, FHEA

EPSRC Doctoral Prize Research Fellow

Tatiana Sofia Alvares-Sanches is currently an EPSRC Research Fellow in Urban Analytics and Geospatial Analysis at the GeoData Institute, School of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton.

Originally trained as an architect, Tatiana has worked for more than five years in architectural and engineering practices across several European Countries. She has an MSc in Energy and Sustainability, and a PhD in geospatial analysis, both from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Southampton. She joined the GeoData Institute and the School of Geography and Environmental Science in February 2020 to work on the development of a digital platform for engaging citizens in urban analytics research.

She is also a Chartered Architect within RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and the Ordem dos Arquitectos (the Portuguese Professional Accreditation Body for Architects), a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) from the University of Southampton.

Research interests

Tatiana’s research interests lie in the understanding of the overall built environment through the fusion of multiple disciplines such as engineering, environmental science, data science and big data analytics. She is particularly interested in:

(i) how data can be used to model and shed light on the complex interactions that occur within urban environments (e.g. between air and noise pollution, heat, flows of people and vehicles) and how these relate to urban form;

(ii) the use of IoT and continuous environmental monitoring to develop integrated frameworks that enable the optimisation of city planning.

Additionally, she is passionate about data visualization, maps and the use of interactive tools to communicate research outputs. Stemming from her background and work experience in architecture, she is also interested in the interplay between the built environment and the building scale, and in the integration of new design solutions and systems to make buildings both more energy efficient and healthier.

Current project:

BigEARS (Big data from Environmental Acoustic Recordings in Southampton) - analysing how the acoustic environment of a city changes as the coronavirus pandemic lockdown is eased. This uses a combination of citizen science (people hosting AudioMoth recorders in their gardens) and transect surveys (as permitted within the one hour exercise period) to gather multi-frequency data across the city.
