Hi, I'm Sophie Bailey and I studied BA Geography within Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

The lecturers are always incredibly engaging and it is clear they are truly passionate about their subjects. This makes a big difference to the lecture experience.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Geography at the University of Southampton?
Firstly, I loved the course here. There are really interesting modules throughout the years, as well as flexibility and choice from day one in terms of external modules, and increased choice throughout the years. I also liked that at Southampton, first year was the same for everyone- which meant that you continued Physical Geography as well as Human Geography. This was important to me as, despite studying BA geography, my A Levels were in science subjects (Maths, Chemistry and AS Physics). I also really liked the city, and the campus feel of the university; with halls being a short walk or bus ride from campus.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying Geography at Southampton?
I have loved all the field trips that we have been on throughout the 3 years. I enjoyed the Isle of Wight trip and the BA Geography trip to Amsterdam so much that I decided to go on the third year trip to Berlin. Being able to choose where you want to go and having such amazing opportunities to go to different places has really enhanced my time here.

The lecturers are always incredibly engaging and it is clear they are truly passionate about their subjects. This makes a big difference to the lecture experience. It also means that they are incredibly willing to help and discuss essays or ideas in detail. This enabled me to explore new ideas and expand my knowledge.

We had a great deal of flexibility in our dissertations and were able to choose to study almost anything we wanted. This allowed me to do my dissertation on something I was really interested in (The Supermarket Reaction to the Climate Change Agenda), alongside an academic who was equally passionate about the subject.

I'd also like to mention Retail Geography and Supermarkets (a particular passion of mine). Southampton is the only University that really offers retail geography based around supermarkets apart from Leeds, and this is a subject I have really enjoyed at Southampton. I also think the University research interest in climate change, and the importance placed on this, is excellent.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?
Southampton offers lots of opportunities both inside and outside of the academic arena. I feel I have done well as a result of the teaching and modules available here. I have also been able to make the most of the careers service and gain experience from practice interviews and information. This helped me to apply for internships and jobs. Attending many careers fairs was incredibly useful for gaining contacts and information.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
I am joining KPMG on their Audit Graduate Programme in Bristol.

Q: How has the University supported you?
I was diagnosed as dyslexic in my first term at Southampton. Although I did not come here specifically because of the Enabling Services and dyslexia help, I would really recommend Southampton if you have learning difficulties and are looking for a University that is particularly supportive. The facilities are fantastic; there is a library room specifically for Assistive Technology. This means that you have a relatively private area to work and everything you need. I have also attended one-to-one and group sessions with dyslexia services, and this made such a difference to my learning experience here.
