Emeritus Professor of English, Chair of English and Book History

Mary Hammond is a Professor of English and Book History at the University of Southampton.

I taught at Middlesex University and the Open University before joining Southampton as Senior Lecturer in English in 2007 and becoming a Professor in 2016. I am a member of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing, the British Association for Victorian Studies, and the Victorian Popular Fiction Association; and I am a senior member of the management group of the AHRC-funded project The Reading Experience Database 1800-1945 .

Research interests

I teach 19th century literature and culture with a specialism in book history, and have particular research interests in the history of reading and the publication and circulation of Victorian and Edwardian popular texts. I welcome applications for MPhil/PhD work on any aspect of Victorian and Edwardian literature, publishing history, and print culture. I am Founder and Director of the interdisciplinary Southampton Centre for Nineteenth-Century Research , in which postgraduates play a full and active part.

Research projects

In 2018-19 I worked with British Academy-funded Visiting Fellow, Dr Sydney Shep (Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), on a project called “Fluid geographies and global mobilities: recovering Southampton’s translocal book trade networks 1840-1914”. Details of the project can be found here .

I am currently working with the Southampton Sea City Museum and Dr David Millard from Electronics and Computer Science on a project to map the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the local and national museums sectors. We aim to create an augmented reality exhibition called ‘After the Titanic: a community recovers’ using material and digital artefacts and the latest AR software to create an engaging exhibition on the historical conflict between economics and public health that can be enjoyed during periods of social distancing.

I convene the undergraduate modules Victorian Bestsellers, the MA 19th-century pathway core module Approaches to the Long Nineteenth Century, and the MA Special Project Victorian Readers and the Politics of Print. I also contribute 19th-century and Book History content to several other modules such as The Novel and Adventures in Literary Research.
