In Memoriam: David Jackson 1931-2024
Southampton Law School is sad to learn of the death of David Cooper Jackson. The following obituary has been provided by his surviving family members.
David died peacefully on February 27th 2024 in Sway, Hampshire. He had been a resident of Milford on Sea for many years. David was born on December 3rd 1931 to Rev and Mrs James and Mary Emma Jackson. David took his first steps towards his lifelong career in Law at Oxford University where he graduated with a double first (1954). David’s early career included posts overseas in Chicago, New York and Singapore, and a five-year residency in Melbourne, Australia, where he held the Sir John Latham chair at Monash University from 1965-70.
Subsequently David was a professor of law at Southampton University from 1971- 1998. During his tenure he was director of the Institute of Maritime Law, Dean of the Law Faculty and traveled as a visiting professor to Arizona, USA. David’s academic career included several publications on Property Law, Maritime Law and Immigration Law. Beginning in 1984 David also adjudicated for the Immigration Appeals Tribunal which he chaired from 1996 to 2003. After he retired, David used his legal skills to help many through the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Throughout his career and after, David was supported by his beloved wife of 50 years, Roma (nee Pendergast), who predeceased him in 2017. David and Roma were a much loved part of the community. David was predeceased by his sister, Dorothea Mary Boulton (2009); he is survived by his nieces, Jane, Nicola and Alison.
The funeral service will take place on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:30 am at West Chapel, Bournemouth Crematorium, Strouden Avenue, Bournemouth BH8 9HX. Reception will follow at Danes Corner, Barnes Lane, Milford-on-Sea SO41 0RL
