Elisabeth Squires LLB (Law)
Hi, I'm Elisabeth Squires and I studied LLB (Law) within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.
Southampton Law School has given me all the help and encouragement I could ever need. The programme is really good, it is challenging but there is a lot of support along the way.
I was encouraged to study law very early on in my A-Levels. My teachers singled me out as having the potential to pursue law and, since then, I have been determined to do it.
When I was looking for a place to study my degree I came to an open day and a taster day at Southampton and these were brilliant experiences.
Southampton has everything to offer. The University itself is great and has brilliant connections to the legal world in Southampton, in London and further afield. The course is brilliantly taught and the networking events are enormously advantageous.
Southampton Law School has given me all the help and encouragement I could ever need. The programme is really good, it is challenging but there is a lot of support along the way. The staff are very advanced and either are, or have been, practitioners. They are approachable and friendly and are always willing to help and support you when you need it.
The Law School also has very strong links with the Law Society and the Inns of Court society and these do a lot for the students. They organise social and networking events, including slave auctions, dinners at the Inns in London, and even trips to the European Court of Justice.
During my studies I was fortunate enough to win an award for a work placement at national law firm Shoosmiths’ Southampton offices. I visited three different departments within the firm – employment, real estate and corporate – and it was an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in the practice of law, my own capabilities under pressure and what it takes to be a lawyer.
A law degree is quite a commitment and it is not something you should embark on lightly. If you have a passion for law, as I did, then I cannot think of a place I would prefer to study, than at Southampton.
As well as a great University and course, the city itself is a really fun place to be. It has a great nightlife, excellent shopping and some awesome bars and pubs. It has all the culture of a massive city and a beautiful big Common where you can hang out and relax.
