Tom Davies LLB Law (Hons), 2017
LLB Law 2017, winner of the Shoosmiths Prize for the outstanding contribution to Southampton Law School
I chose Law because I wanted to study a subject that had a tangible application to the real world; law touches upon almost every area of life. During my study at Southampton Law School, I’ve had some incredible opportunities. I have shadowed Lord Justice Fulford and other leading judges in the Court of Appeal with the Fulford Marshalling Scheme, dined with the President of the Supreme Court, Lord Neuberger, and visited the prestigious Inns of Court.
I would recommend choosing Southampton Law School because of the unrivalled enthusiasm from staff who are leaders in their respective subjects. The faculty at Southampton make studying the law fun and interesting.
Being part of the student-led Inns of Court society developed my all important transferable skills and gave me exposure to the legal profession via introductions to barristers and judges. I was elected as President of the Inns of Court society in 2015 where I had overall responsibility for the society and undertook a total rebrand including the creation of a new logo and blog to which students could contribute. In my final year, I was voted Academic President for the Law School, and worked to bring staff and students closer together and improve the student experience.
My law degree has been one of the most intellectually fulfilling experiences of my life so far. The academic staff at Southampton make studying the law fun and interesting and their passion and vast knowledge of their subject areas has inspired me to become a criminal lawyer. Southampton really developed that interest through highly specialist optional modules and unique extra-curricular activities. There is outstanding support from a dedicated Careers and Employability department.
I would recommend choosing Southampton Law School because of the unrivalled enthusiasm from staff who are leaders in their respective subjects. Academic staff always make time to help you and discuss ideas, not only does that make you feel incredibly welcome in the Law School, but it means you get the best degree possible too.
This year I was fortunate to be awarded an Exhibition Award from Inner Temple enabling me to study the BPTC (Bar Professional Training Course) in London. My next step is to complete this course and, thereafter, my Pupillage at Red Lion Chambers.
