Dr Kate Grimshaw is an Emeritus Fellow within Medicine at the University of Southampton.

Kate Grimshaw qualified as a dietitian in the UK in 1989 after completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (Her first degree was in Human Biology). She has since worked in a number of posts, mostly paediatric. In 1995 she completed her MSc in Human Nutrition and in 2003 gained a post-graduate diploma in Allergy. In 2012 she completed her PhD looking at infant feeding practices in the first year of life and the development of food allergy.

In 1999 she joined the University of Southampton, specialising in maternal and infant nutrition and paediatric food allergy. She has worked on a number of research studies investigating different aspects of paediatric nutrition. Whilst doing this she continued to work clinically, advising parents and careers on many aspects of infant and early years nutrition.

She is often asked to write articles on infant and early years nutrition and also on different aspects of food allergy and is also sought after as a speaker/lecturer internationally on such topics. She is currently resident in the USA due to her husband’s work. During this time she continues to work for the University of Southampton working on a number of their research projects and supervising a number of MSc students.

Research interests

I have worked in research since 1999 and in that time have worked in all aspects of clinical research from project design, delivery, analysis, write-up and paper authorship. Additionally I have held a number of positions which promote the importance of research in clinical practice including research dietitian at the Wellcome Trust Research Facility (Southampton General Hospital), member of the British Dietetic Association research committee and I am currently research officer of the International Network of Dietitians and Nutritionists in Allergy (INDANA).

My major research interested in infant and childhood feeding and how this is affected by allergy and also how this affects food allergy development and since 2005 I have been working on the Prevalence of Infant Food Allergy (PIFA) birth cohort study (funded by UK Foods Standards Agency, PI Professor Graham Roberts). The cohort contributed data to the EU FP6 Europrevall Project (led by Professor Claire Mills) where the specific aims were to establish the prevalence and pattern of food allergy across Europe and investigate the underlying environmental, including different weaning patterns (Keil Allergy 2010). As part of this project I collected prospective food diaries from the UK mothers detailing how they fed their infants. This data has already resulted in 3 publications (Grimshaw et al Mat Child Nutr 2013, Grimshaw et al JACI 2013, Grimshaw et al Pediatrics 2013) with more anticipated. The PIFA study is being extended as the FP7 funded iFAAM Project (led by Professor Claire Mills) where I will be leading on the investigation on the effect of current diet on allergy and asthma symptoms.

My dietetic and nutritional expertise has also been sought for a number of other food allergy projects including the EAT study and work into ‘may contain’ labelling eBarnett et al, BMC Public Health 2011), allergy threshold work (Grimshaw et al, Clin Exp Allergy 2003; Hourihane et al, Clin Exp Allergy 2005) and other food allergy studies involving food challenges (Lucas et al Clin Exp allergy, 2004; Hourihane et al JACI, 2007). I also provided my dietetic knowledge to the University of Southampton Psychology department study into Food additives and behaviour (McCann D et al Lancet 2007; Stevenson et al Am J Psychiatry 2010).
