Within the Modern Languages section, our academic staff offer numerous courses which include Mexico-related topics.
We are strong in several major areas of Spanish and Latin American Studies: in particular, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, history and politics. Our academic staff actively organise and participate in international conferences such as the study of Spanish in Society (SiS) and the biennial Sociolinguistics Symposium. Furthermore, the SPLAS (Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies) section has around 250 students, 14 lecturing staff and five language assistants and has a lively and active student society.

In September 2009, the University of Southampton in conjunction with the British Council launched a Masters degree programme in English Language Teaching (MA in ELT). This is delivered entirely online with highly innovative pedagogy to support the total virtual experience. The materials and programme rationale have been devised jointly and whilst the delivery will be from the British Council, the moderation, evaluation and award are from the University of Southampton ( click here to find out more ). The MA in ELT is warmly supported by the SEP that provide generous funding for Mexican university teachers to pursue their academic goals.
