Virtually every part of our everyday lives is influenced by materials – transportation, housing, clothing, recreation and food processing. The selection of appropriate materials in design and manufacture, along with an understanding of how those materials behave in service is fundamental to mechanical engineering.
This pathway draws on the expertise of staff in our Engineering Materials Research Group , which is actively involved in a broad range of activities in the materials field.
Materials options will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the in-service properties of a range of materials, including composites. You will learn how to identify solutions through the application of sophisticated surface coatings or materials that can adapt to their environment. You will also have the opportunity to investigate the modelling of material behaviour - an essential ingredient of engineering design at an advanced level.
