There were lively break out discussions on Day 2

The conference, from the 5-6 March 2018, was held at the Tomreik Hotel in Accra. Nine NAMRIP colleagues from the University of Southampton joined 60 invited delegates, from Ghana, Uganda and Malawi, at the conference. The event also included the inaugural meeting of the Global-NAMRIP Africa hub Steering Committee.

Professor Tim Leighton introduced the conference and there were keynotes by Professor Osman Sankoh, Executive Director of the InDEPTH Network and Dr Martha Gyansa-Lutterodt, Chair of the Ghana AMR Alliance. Day 1 of the conference saw presentations of work that the Global-NAMRIP researchers have been doing at Southampton and presentations from African delegates on their work tackling AMR.

Day 2 of the conference provided an opportunity for Southampton’s Global-NAMRIP researchers to engage in conversations and discussions with stakeholders including academics, government organisations and policy makers from Ghana, Malawi and Uganda. The discussions allowed identification of important contacts which should lead to collaborative research opportunities, in the future, in areas like infection prevention, identifying veterinary residues and other microbes in fish and meat products, using new diagnostic technologies in LMICs and models for UK collaboration on AMR control between the UK, Ghana, Malawi and Uganda.

Professor Leighton closed the meeting with thanks to the speakers, attendees, and to Yvonne Richardson and Frances Clarke for their hard work over the preceding months administering the organization of this conference.
