Global-NAMRIP’s First Virtual Conference
With participants from across Africa, Asia and Europe, wide-ranging presentations on AMR and an exciting 3MT competition, Global-NAMRIP’s first Virtual Conference was a great success.
Introduced by Global-NAMRIP chair, Professor Timothy Leighton, the conference was held on the 10th June via TEAMS. It was inspiring to see so many of the projects presented were formed due to the Global-NAMRIP network enabling academics from different disciplines to meet and discuss potential solutions in the fight against AMR, oftentimes using pump-priming funds that Global-NAMRIP had provided. Professor Paul Elkington, a clinician at the hospital, presented on the hugely successful implementation of an air purifying respirator as an alternative to PPE. He talked about how he knew exactly who to contact in Engineering, as a result of a meeting at a Global-NAMRIP event and gratefully acknowledged this support. Another example is Professor Alex Hughes from the University of Newcastle who presented on changing food systems in Kenya and Malawi and the challenges of tackling AMR. This project was kicked off at the Global-NAMRIP conference in Uganda in 2019 where the project team first met.
Presentations from the conference can be viewed and downloaded below.
Throughout the presentations, attendees were able to make comments and ask questions through the TEAMS chat, with Professor Leighton reading out a selection of questions at the end of each session.
In support of our PhD students, we were delighted to include a Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition as part of the event. Judging was via a panel with representation from Medicine, Microbiology, Engineering and Social Science. The panel, who were impressed by the high standard of all the entries, awarded the following prizes at the closing event. Each recipient has received a Certificate and gift voucher. The 3MT presentations can be viewed/downloaded below.
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition
First Prize : Bethany Martin (University of Southampton / Public Health England)
Second Prize : Weng Yee (Beverly) Chong (University of Southampton)
Third Prize : Ravi Kant (University of Delhi, India)
Highly Commended : Nichola Jones (University of Leeds)
Highly Commended : Stephen Poole (University of Southampton)
Highly Commended : Siya Aggrey (Stellenbosch University, South Africa)
The conference ended with a fond farewell , and presentation of a card and gift, to Yvonne Richardson, who has been NAMRIP’s network manager since its foundation in 2015.
