Southampton has five subjects placed in the global top 50 of the 2019 QS World Rankings by Subject.

The University of Southampton has performed well in this year’s QS World Rankings by Subject 2019 with five subject areas placing in the top 50 globally.

Nursing at Southampton leads the way, rising to 5th in the world from 9th last year, and placing 3rd  amongst UK universities to be ranked by QS. Nursing is joined in the world’s top 50 by:

  • Mining Engineering – 30th
  • Earth & Marine Sciences – 46th
  • Statistics & Operational Research – 48th
  • Archaeology – =48th

The University’s performance in these, and other areas to feature in the world’s top 100, is powered by its continued improvement in reputational rating amongst academic peers and employers around the world and good scores for research citations and ‘h-index’ which measures the productivity and impact of work published by scientists and scholars in the subject.

Professor Mandy Fader, Head of Health Sciences, credited the dedication of her colleagues in Nursing: “This terrific result in the QS World Ranking comes from a huge amount of work and commitment by our exceptional staff. We are very proud to be preparing nurses to reach the very top of their profession and to be changing policy and practice across the world through our research and education.”

Professor Rachel Mills, Dean of Environmental and Life Sciences expressed her delight in the University’s ranking for Mining Engineering and Earth & Marine Sciences: “We are proud of our consistent top 50 QS World Ranking, and top 10 UK Ranking in Earth & Marine Sciences, and Mining Engineering.  Our reputation is driven by the passion and talent of staff and students who work, study and have graduated from the University of Southampton.  Our collaborative research spans all continents and the global ocean; our students thrive within this international environment.”

Commenting on the University’s global success in Statistics & Operational Research, Professor Jon Forster, Head of Mathematical Sciences, said “This is a very welcome recognition of the high quality research and education that Southampton delivers in Statistics and Operational Research, from Undergraduate and Masters programmes to research which impacts government, business and industry. Both CORMSIS (Centre for OR, Management Sciences and Information Systems) and S3RI (Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute) are world class centres, working across a range of Schools at the University.”

Professor Nikos Tzavidis, Head of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, added: “This is the result of a genuinely collaborative interdisciplinary range of education and research activities in Statistics and Operational Research led by colleagues across the schools of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and the Southampton Business School. Now co-located in a single Faculty, we look forward to building on our acknowledged strengths going forward.”

Head of Archaeology, Professor Alistair Pike, praised his colleagues for their role in making Archaeology at Southampton so renowned around the world: “I am thrilled by our place in the top 50 of Archaeology departments in the world, and in the top 10 in the UK. Our international reputation is down to the high quality of our staff's research and their students' projects. Between them they have studied Archaeology in every continent except Antarctica.”
