Edward Henden BSc Geophysics, 2006
Seismic Processor
I first visited Southampton on a University open day, and my first impression was that it was an expansive but welcoming city. On the same day I also visited the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). NOCS initially felt imposing and I could see myself getting lost in the ship-like interior. This feeling changed however when I saw the resources it had to offer, such as the Oceanographic Library. This specialist space seemed small but I later learnt that it was a great source of concise information for my studies.
I am now working as a seismic processor - the company I work for has projects all over the world, with plenty of opportunities for advancement in my career.
I chose Geophysics as I had a deep interest in geology, but also wanted to involve aspects of maths and physics. The University hosts a number of leading specialists at the NOC, with cross field interests meaning that lecturers know what they are talking about! The fieldtrips were also excellent, and definitely one of the most memorable things about my time at Southampton. Another memorable aspect of the University was the number of societies and sports clubs available, all run by students. I was heavily involved with the Christian Union (CU) which is one of the biggest in the country. I also got involved with weekly training and games of Ultimate Frisbee and I am still in touch with my team mates today.
After graduating I got a job with a marine surveying company based in Southampton where I spent four years. It was an exciting role, and a constant challenge, working offshore and in the office on a diverse range of projects. One project allowed me to work with one of my previous tutors and lecturer from Southampton, which was initially strange because I was now working with them at their level.
Since leaving that company I am now working as a seismic processor, and the company I work for has projects all over the world, with plenty of opportunities for advancement in my career.
Advice I would give to students studying toward a degree at Southampton is find out about possible career choices early on so you can tailor your course accordingly - a degree from Southampton can be as specific as you want it to be! I would recommend researching and signing up to a summer placement as early as your 2nd year, because this experience will prove to be invaluable after graduation. I did and now I am working for the company I had a placement with! Researching background knowledge on potential industries and employers is crucial, as is having confidence in your abilities and skills.
