Francesca Pereira MSci Oceanography with Study Abroad, 2019
Underwater Domain Scientist, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)
Oceanography was the perfect degree for me, combining my love of science and the natural environment. I chose to specialise in physical oceanography with dedicated modules and a dissertation on convective mixing processes in the Labrador Sea. The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) was an incredible environment to study in, surrounded by leading researchers and lunch views of renowned research vessels.
From oceanographic surveying at sea to coding at a computer, the skills I developed at Southampton were instrumental for me to make the most of my year abroad in Miami and securing a job at DSTL.
One of the highlights of my degree would undoubtedly be my year studying abroad at the University of Miami, USA. NOC’s reputation was well-known even across the pond, and the practical scientific skills and in-depth knowledge from my first two years at Southampton allowed me to participate in higher-level modules and research projects at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). Outside of my lectures I took part in wave tank experiments of hurricane conditions and conducted an independent research project on North Atlantic salinity anomalies.
Shortly after graduating, I started working as a scientist for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). My role mainly involves analysing and modelling underwater acoustics to support maritime operations, with some opportunities to travel both in the UK and abroad. I hope to eventually do a PhD either in ocean acoustics, or expanding on my dissertation project on ocean circulation and sub-Arctic processes.
