Matthew King BSc Oceanography, 2008
Biology teacher
When I first set foot in the National Oceanography Centre I knew I was somewhere special and that I had to be part of it. There is a welcoming atmosphere with student’s rubbing shoulders with cutting edge researchers, who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with you.
There are so many advantages about studying in Southampton, especially for the marine sciences.
I chose to study Oceanography as I was looking to become a teacher after university. I felt that the course provided a great range of experience in physics, chemistry and biology, as well as the good amount of fieldwork. Following up on the teaching theme I became a Student Ambassador whilst studying. This allowed me to go to local schools and talk to young people about oceanography. I left each school with a beaming smile knowing that I had engaged and excited students.
There are so many advantages about studying in Southampton, especially for the marine sciences; The availability of researchers and academics all in one building, the fantastic oceanographic facilities right on your doorstep and the reputation of a world renowned University are a few!
Currently I am working as a Biology teacher at Secondary School level. I love how every day is different and how you can celebrate every results day. I have had some great comments from my students, as well as being graded for outstanding teaching whilst working toward my PGCE and having this award repeated in my current role.
Some advice I would give to current students would be to work out what area you would like to go into as soon as you can. Studying at the University of Southampton gives you access to a wide range of work experience, so make the most of it!
If I had to sum up my time at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton in 3 words they would be cutting-edge, inspirational and precious.
