Nikhil is currently a Research Fellow at The National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton, UK. His research concerns the operation of sonar and the acoustic properties of biologically accommodated sediments. He was formerly an Acoustic Consultant at Arup in Winchester, England, UK, after completing a PhD in underwater acoustics at the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton. Nikhil’s research project consisted of acoustic modelling of bubble clouds and the development of active sonar techniques in bubbly waters.
I am very interested in inspiring people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to do what makes them the happiest. Science makes me happy; it's what wakes me up in the morning and that's why I stick at it and that's why I like to share my passion for it.
As well as underwater acoustics, Nikhil is also very passionate about communication and has therefore become a highly active member of the university’s public engagement network. He has been a STEM Ambassador since 2010 and assisted in the university’s Outreach Roadshow. He organised a comedy club for researchers, called Bright Club Southampton, running between 2015 and 2018, as well as performed in their first show. Further, he helped facilitate in a science café called The Science Room. He continuously visits schools and offer tours of the ISVR, along with presenting on acoustics to a range of audiences to highlight the presence of acoustics is everyday life.
Nikhil is a Member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), working with their STEM and Outreach committee, a member of the UK Acoustics Network (UKAN) Early Careers committee and also a member of the ISVR Recruitment and Outreach steering group.
