The University of Southampton has established an international excellence in the field of performance sports engineering over four decades. Its world-leading design and test capabilities and outstanding innovation and technical expertise are respected by and relied upon by high-performance sports bodies from around the world, notably the competitive sailing, Formula 1 racing, cycling and winter sports. In 2011, the University was awarded a Queen's Aniversary Prize in recognition of our world leading innovation and expertise.
Wolfson Unit and wind tunnel engineers with support from academics have been contributing to British success in a number of high-performance sports and have had a close working relationship with UK Sport since 2005.
The University has played a key role in the development of Formula 1 racing over several decades, and continues to provide world-leading research, development, consultancy and teaching for the industry.
The Yacht Research Unit was stated in the late 1950’s in Southampton with much of the original wind tunnel testing of sail taking place in the low speed wind tunnel. Classic texts such as those by Marchaj derived the information from these tests. This long history of research has developed a wide body of research on sailing.
Research engineers from the University of Southampton have been working with British Skeleton and UK Sport in helping athletes prepare for major competitions since October 2006.
