Professor Constantine Sedikides from the School of Psychology has been awarded a Life-Time Achievement Award from the European Association for Personality Psychology, a Career Contribution Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and a Distinguished Lifetime Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity.

The European Association for Personality Psychology honours outstanding senior researchers whose life work has had a significant and profound impact on the field of personality psychology. Professor Sedikides was awarded the Life-Time Achievement Award in recognition for “his theoretically innovative, methodologically rigorous, highly programmatic, and tremendously influential work on the study of the self and identity, core topics in personality psychology.”

The Career Contribution Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology was awarded to Professor Sedikides in recognition of his major theoretical and empirical contributions to social and personality psychology and to bridging these areas together.

The Distinguished Lifetime Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity is presented to researchers who have made major, enduring contributions to understanding self and identity over the course of their academic careers.

Professor Sedikides’ research focuses on self-definition approached from three innovative and programmatic angles: (1) What information do people desire and select en route to self-definition? (2) How do people use their past to achieve self-definition? (3) How do people form a self-definition that feels real? These questions led to corresponding, and interrelated, research programmes on self-evaluation ( self-enhancement/self-protection, narcissism ), nostalgia , and authenticity .

Professor Constantine Sedikides commented, “ I am deeply honoured to receive these career awards. I am grateful to my mentors, students (both post-graduate and undergraduate), research fellows, and colleagues. I acknowledge, in particular, the supportive and intellectually stimulating environment of the Centre for Research on Self and Identity, and the School of Psychology, at our university. Indeed, it takes a village to make a scholar .”

Professor Matthew Garner, Head of School of Psychology added, “ I am delighted that Professor Sedikides’ work has been recognised on a global scale by his peers. His significant contributions to the field of Social and Personality Psychology are one of the reasons why our School’s research environment is rated as world leading and internationally excellent. The discipline has benefited greatly from the countless researchers and students Constantine has mentored in the Centre for Research on Self & Identity at Southampton over many years .''

Constantine Sedikides is Professor of Social and Personality Psychology and Director of the Centre for Research of Self and Identity at University of Southampton. He has held academic appointments at University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
