Event details
This is the largest Science and Engineering Fair of its kind, attracting school children from across the nation to the Birmingham NEC across a four day event.
The department of Psychology along with collaborators from the Universities of Bath, Dundee, Kent and Leicester will come together to present a programme of workshops around the theme 'The Identity Detectives'.
Our Identity Detectives stand is designed to give young people a first-hand experience of the sort of science that we do, all of which helps our understanding of how to identify someone. That person may be a suspect in a crime, a missing person in an investigation, or they may be traveller wanting to get through border control. In this way, our science is affecting all sorts of important challenges in everyday living. We want to show visitors to the Fair the latest discoveries in this area.
You can find the Identity Detectives in the Alive Zone and our stand is designed to give young visitors a hands-on experience of the science of identity:
At the Hand Stand , we will be using specialist cameras to help us look at different aspects of hands really clearly.
In the Avatar Stand , we ask children the question - what will your avatar look like and what will it say about you? Do you think others would be able to recognise you from your avatar? Do you think you could recognise them?
Our Walkway activity studies gait and what we can tell about the way we walk. Children can explore how and why we each move as we do and some of the science behind the analysis of someone's walk.
