Public Policy@Southampton are delighted to host a public debate ‘Views on Europe’, offering staff and students of the University and local communities an opportunity to discuss views both for and against the UK remaining in the EU, ahead of the referendum on 23 June, 2016.

Speaker information

Rt. Hon. Desmond Swayne MP, ,Minister for Department for International Development & MP for New Forest West,will represent the "Leave" position. He was first elected to parliament in 1997 and has since been re-elected several times. As a minister, Desmond Swayne has overseen issues dealing with Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East, working actively in the trade, conflict, humanitarian and security departments.

Dr Alan Whitehead ,MP for Southampton Test and Southampton Alumnus,will represent the "Remain" position in the debate. He became city councillor in 1980 and then Leader of the Council when Labour took control in 1994. In 1997, he finally won the election to become a Labour MP for Southampton Test. Since then he has been re-elected several times and currently serves as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Department of Transport.

James Edwards,will also represent the "Remain" position. He is a Politics and International Relations student at the University of Southampton. James also serves as the Social Sciences Academic President in the UoS Students' Union, and is a founding member of the Students for Europe society.

Matthew Cowley,will represent the "Leave" position in the campaign. Matthew is a Politics and Economics Student at the University of Southampton. He is leader of Southampton 'Students for Britain' and an active member of the Conservative Party.
