In this episode, Giles talks to Professor Neil Bressloff about TAVI , transcatheter aortic valve implantation used in the treatment of aortic heart valve disease. Degenerative heart valve disease is a growing problem in the ageing populations of Europe and North America. Also, tens of millions of people in low- and middle-income countries of the global south, experience valve failure following bacterial throat infections. Importantly, so-called, rheumatic heart valve disease affects large numbers of adults of all ages in these poorer parts of the world. Paul Elkington, Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Southampton, alongside Giles, Director of Public Policy|Southampton, were invited to chat about the developement of the ground-breaking PeRSo respirator and Paul's work during COVID-19. The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) has awarded the University of Southampton team behind PeRSo - Personal Respirator Southampton - with a President’s Special Award for Pandemic Service for exceptional engineering achievements in tackling COVID-19 throughout the UK. Both Professor Elkington and his colleague Hywel Morgan have been awarded MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to medicine and services to biomedical engineering respectively.
