MIMOSA (MIgration MOdeling for Statistical Analyses) is a three-year project funded by Eurostat to support the development and application of statistical modeling techniques for the estimation of missing data on migration flows and foreign population stocks.
The project is being coordinated by the
Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI)
and involves experts on migration statistics from several academic and research institutions.
In S3RI James Raymer and Guy Abel are developing the modeling approach to estimate international migration flows between countries in the European Union. The aim is to account for the many differences in definitions, quality and sources of available migration data and to estimate the missing data. A categorical data analysis approach is applied to model various structures in the migration flow tables, representing the gross flows of immigration and emigration and the interactions between countries. The preliminary estimates provide valuable insights into the overall picture of population movements, and suggest areas for improving the modeling approach.
