Research project:  The Use of Paradata in Cross–Sectional and Longitudinal Surveys

The key objectives of this research are to investigate the uses of paradata for cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys with the aim of improving field process management and intervention decisions during data collection. The methodological development on how best to use such paradata in statistical models plays another key area.

Overview

This 3.5-year ESRC-funded project (start date 1 Sept 2011 until Feb 2015; RES-062-23-2997) is directed by Dr Gabriele Durrant (University of Southampton) and is being carried out in conjunction with Prof Peter Smith (University of Southampton), Prof Frauke Kreuter (University of Maryland, IAB Nuernberg) and Dr Olga Maslovskaya (University of Southampton). The project team are collaborating with other national and international researchers, including staff from CBS Netherlands, Institute for Employment Research (IAB, Nuremberg), National Centre for Research Methods (NatCen), Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and the Joint Program for Survey Methodology.

The research is organised into three sub-projects which:

  1. investigate the use of call record data and interviewer observations to study nonresponse in longitudinal surveys;
  2. provide insights into the effects of interviewing strategies and other interviewer attributes on response in longitudinal surveys, and
  3. gain knowledge about the measurement error properties of paradata, in particular interviewer observations.
    Analysis techniques include multilevel, discrete-time event history and longitudinal data analysis methods. Dissemination includes a short course and an international workshop on paradata.
