'THE CURIOUS CASE OF MADEMOISELLE DE CHOISEUL'
In the 1720s, all Paris was awash with rumours about the true identity of Mlle de Saint-Cyr. She claimed to be the hidden daughter of the duc and duchesse de Choiseul. The marks on her skin, medical records, the family's fortune, her mother's reputation were all discussed in private conversations and in the law-courts. Her case offers a fascinating insight into ‘Ancien Régime' mores and will allow us to address questions which are still of interest today.
Catriona Seth is professor of 18th-century studies at the Université de Lorraine and World Leading Researcher at Queen's University (Belfast). She has published widely on topics ranging from inoculation ( Les Rois aussi en mouraient. Les Lumières en lutte contre la petite vérole , 2008) to Marie Antoinette ( Marie-Antoinette. Anthologie et dictionnaire , 2006) and edited a variety of texts from Laclos' Liaisons dangereuses (Paris, Gallimard, Pléiade, 2011) to women's memoirs ( La Fabrique de l'intime. Mémoires et journaux de femmes du XVIIIe siècle ).
