MPhil/PhD

One advantage in studying for your MPhil/PhD at Southampton is that we are able to put together teams of supervisors and advisors from more than one discipline.

PhD dissertations completed this year include:

Amy Clarke, ‘Female Dishonour, Transgression and Celebrity in 18th Century England, c. 1750-1790’

Maria Newbery (Curator of Maritime and Local Collections at Southampton City Council), recently completed her dissertation on Southampton’s eighteenth-century maritime trade -- an important contribution to our understanding of the town and its commercial links with the wider world in that period.

Alison Daniell, ‘Disappearing Women? Wives in Fact and Fiction During the Long Eighteenth Century’

Alison was also awarded the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies prize for 2020 in October, for her paper ‘Of False Hair, Bolstered Hips and Witchcraft: The Regulation of Women’s Bodies and an Act of Parliament that Never Was’. Read more about Alison’s discovery here .
