Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is a unique, internationally recognised centre of excellence for research, innovation and education. Our work spans both the natural ocean environment (marine) and human use of the sea (maritime). We are a community of academics from across the University of Southampton, whose interests and research are linked to the marine/maritime realm. By working across the traditional disciplinary divides, we can better address some of today’s global marine & maritime challenges.
Our ambition is to become the world’s leading institute for marine and maritime research, innovation and education. We are achieving this by creating interdisciplinary, cross-sector partnerships both inside and outside the university covering humanities, natural, physical and social sciences. Knowledge generated through our collaborative research is applied in our teaching to create the next generation of marine and maritime professionals.
Fluid structure interactions: Our research in the behaviour of engineering systems in maritime environments is world class. Driven by business needs focusing on safety, reliability, efficiency and environmental impact, the application of our research helps to improve the integration of system design, production and operation across a range of platforms including ships, submarines and submersibles, yachts and offshore structures.
Engineering and environmental science: Top rated in the UK’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework we are the largest and most diverse engineering and environmental science grouping in the UK. Our expertise spans a wide range of disciplines, including acoustical, biomedical, civil, computational, electro-mechanical, environmental, geotechnical and materials engineering, energy technologies, ship science, transportation and Maritime law.
Ocean and earth sciences: Our unique waterfront campus, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, has allowed us to recruit top-level researchers and educators from around the world. We work within the areas of geochemistry, geology and geophysics, marine biogeochemistry, marine biology and ecology, palaeoceanography and palaeoclimate and physical oceanography.
Maritime archaeological research: Learning from the past and protecting our heritage and environment is vital for the future. Our multidisciplinary research draws on the University's established excellence in archaeology, marine geophysics, history, environmental science, computing and ship science to address diverse maritime archaeological and underwater cultural heritage questions.
SMMI is committed to training the maritime professions for tomorrow. Our courses include a one year integrated preparatory course that is custom-designed and delivered to prepare students for entry to our BEng or MEng degree programmes, both in Malaysia and in the UK. By studying at the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, students will obtain a world-class education from one of the best engineering schools at a fraction of the cost.
The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) at the University of Southampton has officially launched a joint laboratory in Singapore with the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) at A*STAR, Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research, to focus on maritime and offshore engineering research and development.
The University's standing in the marine sector is equal to its excellent reputation throughout academia.
