Jin Wei Lim
PhD Studentship in Uncertainty in localization, mapping, and automated analysis in marine imaging applications
Hi, I'm Jin Wei Lim and I am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholar within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton.
I am very fortunate to be able to pursue a PhD under the Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarship. This exciting interdisciplinary opportunity allows me to further develop my passion in robotics and autonomous systems, and continue working with superb supervisors I met during my bachelor’s degree in the same university.
The aim of my PhD is to develop instruments and methods to generate high-resolution, georeferenced maps of geometrically complex deep-seafloor energy infrastructures, such as those used in the oil and gas industry, using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), and develop computational tool to extract numerical information from vast marine image datasets, including seafloor and borehole/core images.
This project is transdisciplinary and requires engagement across the fields of geology, geochemistry and both fundamental and applied aspects of marine robots and sensing.
My supervisory team consists of Dr Blair Thornton (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment), Professor Adam Prugel-Bennett (Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science), and Professor Damon Teagle (Faculty of Ocean and Earth Science).
