Part of a national campaign, Southampton BioBlitz brings the local community and nature experts together to explore local wildlife and biodiversity.
What is a BioBlitz?
A “BioBlitz” is a great outdoor, community event where expert naturalists and members of the public work together to do a fast survey of all forms of life in a natural space. It's a race to find as many different species of plants, birds, insects, fungi, mammals, and everything else as possible! Find out more on the national BioBlitz page.
In June 2014, students, staff and the local community gathered on the university campus for a series of guided walks on the campus and the common, exploring the biodiversity to be found including butterflies, birds, plants... A bat walk on the Friday night and early morning bird walk were sold out, with over 100 people attending across the whole event. Read more about the event and see photos here .
In 2015, BioBlitz returned with over 250 different species identified by experts and citizen scientists working together.
