Professional registration is an assessment of skills and on-the-job experience a technician or an engineer has developed throughout their career, by an independent professional body. Becoming registered demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development, keeping skills and knowledge up to date through continuing professional development (CPD), and ongoing commitment to exacting standards of professionalism.
Professionally registered colleagues are recognised for their competence, ability, and integrity. Professional registration provides a benchmark through which the public, employers and their clients can have confidence and trust that registered technicians and engineers have met globally recognised professional standards.
Technicians at the University of Southampton are supported in their application for professional registration. The University hosts annual events with Science Council and Engineering Council, as well organise writing workshops and mentoring events. In 2021 UoS joined the Science Council’s Employer Champion Program and provides a package of support for technician’s who want to become professionally registered.
