Ever wanted to be part of a community of singers? The University of Southampton Voices is a community choir open to students, staff and the local community and is always looking for new singers.
Formed in 2012 and directed by professional musician and Turner Sims Professor Harvey Brough, the choir welcomes choral veterans and novices alike, to sing classical and popular music, as well as contemporary compositions by Harvey and acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Clara Sanabras.
The choir has grown from strength to strength, regularly performing two concerts a year, including performances at Turner Sims concert hall and St Michael’s Church , Southampton. The choir gives members the opportunity to perform an unusual mix of repertoire in inspirational spaces across the city.
Rehearsals take place each Wednesday between 13:10 – 13:40 during University term-time at Turner Sims, Highfield Campus. The choir is free to join, with a small charge for a copy of the music score, which you will get to keep after your performance.
Joining a choir is an incredible experience and is open to everyone whether you’re a student, staff or a member of the public. Don’t worry if you don’t read music. The choir can provide audio recordings to help everyone learn the music by heart. The choir is always open to new members, with the only requirement being a friendly nature, curious about singing and open to collaborating with an inspiring group of people.
Past concerts have featured contemporary music, pieces composed by Harvey and classical works. Works performed include Songs of Spanish Exile (composed by the internationally acclaimed folk and world singer songwriter, Clara Sanabras), The Year of the Jubilee: The Story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers (composed by Harvey with lyrics by the playwright Justin Butcher) and Vivaldi’s Gloria as part of a concert called A Particulare Care, a programme of music concerned with orphans. Music on the Mind explored issues of mental health and was composed by Harvey and performed at Turner Sims alongside the world-famous Britten Sinfonia.
