Mr Vlad Stefan Paul BEng, MSc
Postgraduate Research Student
Vlad Paul is a Postgraduate Research Student at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
Vlad graduated from the Jade University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg with a BEng in Hearing Technology and Audiology in 2018. His thesis was about the synthesis of bass guitar sounds and a comparison between different signal processing algorithms. He then graduated with an MSc. in Acoustical Engineering in 2020 from ISVR and wrote his thesis on the use of heuristic methods to improve audio source separation results using Non-Negative Matrix Factorisation. The algorithms were successfully applied to stereo mixtures of different instruments. In October 2019 he joined the VAAE team and started a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Philip Nelson and Dr. Filippo Fazi. His main area of research is signal processing and its application to problems in audio and acoustics. He has a particular interest in the application of neural networks to problems in audio signal processing and is working on fundamental properties of such networks, in addition to their application in acoustics. He is currently working on the application of neural networks to the source separation problem.
